Obituary for Ruth Jackson Altman

Mrs. Ruth Jackson Altman, 94, passed away peacefully on March 8, 2019. She was born in the Mingo community of Sampson County on July 10, 1924 to Herman and Nellie Honeycutt Jackson.

In her early years, Ruth, along with her older sister Margaret and younger sister Frances, worked with their parents on the farm and in their father’s general store. In 1950 Ruth married Lewis W. Altman and they were blessed with two daughters Ruthie and Laurie. Their lives together would be spent in the store business. As a husband and wife team they operated several stores over their careers, but they were most well-known as the proprietors of Altman’s Grocery Barn, on the corner of Highway 13 and Wrench Rd. in Sampson County.

Ruth loved her family, friends, and customers; was kind and loving to all, and was rarely seen without a smile on her face. She was a life long member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church where she served and worshiped God faithfully. Traveling on bus trips with friends, spending time with her family on Oak Island, and working in her yard and flower beds were some of the great joys of her life.

Ruth is preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Nellie Jackson; sisters, Margaret Jackson and Frances Jackson, and husband Lewis Wilborn Altman.

Ruth is survived by her daughters, Ruthie Jackson and Laurie Jackson, sons-in-law, Bruce Jackson and Don Jackson; four grandchildren, Aaron Jackson and wife Shannon, Brian Jackson and wife Morgan, Reggie Jackson, Valerie J. Branch and husband Landis and six great grandchildren, Reagan, Corbin, Waylon, Luke, Colt and Ace Jackson, all of which are very thankful to the staff of Harnett Woods Nursing Center for the great care they provided her.

A funeral service will be held at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church on Monday, March 11, 2019 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Kyle Burrows and Rev. Neal Vick officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

A visitation will be held Sunday, March 10, 2019 from 6-8 p.m. at Skinner & Smith Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Bruce and Ruthie Jackson.

Memorial made be made to the Alzheimer’s Association Eastern North Carolina Chapter, 5171 Glenwood Ave Suite 101, Raleigh, NC 27612.
