Obituary for Roy Stephens Tart, Sr.

It is with a sad, yet extremely grateful, heart that the family of Roy Stephens Tart, Sr., age 92, share that he went home to be with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Friday morning, September 27, 2019.

Roy was born on May 9, 1927, in Harnett County, NC, to the late Susan Jackson and Jesse Tart. He was the fifth of seven children and grew up on the family farm; located just outside of Dunn off Hwy 421, east of I-95. He spent much of his childhood working on the farm, hunting and playing football, baseball and basketball. His love for the outdoors and sports was well known to all who knew him.

Shortly before he was to graduate high school, Roy was drafted to serve in the United States Marine Corps during World War II; along with his brothers, Ed and Howard, who served in the US Navy. While serving in the Marines, he was stationed at an airbase in China and at Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, NC. All three brothers safely returned home, and Roy graduated from Dunn High School in 1947. He went on to earn a B.A. in Social Science at Atlantic Christian College, now Barton College, in 1951.

Roy was always an integral part of Tart family businesses. He could always be found working in the fields or on the farms; cruising, buying or cutting timber for the sawmill or ginning and bailing cotton at either the Benson or Dunn gins. An entrepreneur at heart, Roy’s business career also included owning service stations, a restaurant, interstate billboard signs and a landowner. For over 60 years his business partner was his beloved brother Howard.

With a love and passion for serving his community, Roy spent many years as member of the First Presbyterian Church, where he served as a deacon and chaired the committee for Boy Scout Troop 711. He was also a loyal member of American Legion Post 59, a Mason and Shriner.

Roy is survived by his wife of 65 years, Jeanne Goff Tart; his sons Roy Stephens Tart, Jr., wife Michelle; Rowland Dwight Tart, wife Elaine, and daughter Susan Tart Dean, husband Perry; grandchildren, Greg Tart, wife Allison, Patrick Tart, wife Kimberly, Christina Tart Hays, husband Cory, Preston Stewart, Austin Tart, wife Emma, Kendall Tart, English Dean and Mathis Dean; great grandchildren, Adeline Tart, Gabe Tart, Ruben Tart, Zeke Tart, Trent Stephens, Asa Hays, and Justin Hays.
