Obituary for Rochelle Jackson Pope

With profound regret her family announces the passing of Rochelle Jackson Pope. For over 110 years Rochelle was the matriarch of the Pope and Jackson families of Eastern North Carolina. By the force of her will, the depth of her intellect, and the strength of her character she influenced countless students, neighbors, relatives and community leaders. It was her pride that her family has been and continues to be contributors to the betterment of the communities in which they reside.

Born on March 9, 1908 on the Buck Jackson plantation at Jackson’s corner, Rochelle is believed to have been the second oldest person in the state. Rochelle was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Efton Pope, two sons, Claude Edwin Pope and Patrick Harris Pope, a granddaughter, Caroline Denning Pope.

Rochelle attended Pineland School for girls and East Carolina Teacher College (now ECU). She worked for years as a teacher and principal. She was active in church and community affairs until after age 100. Rochelle was a member of Divine St. United Methodist Church since 1942. She taught Sunday school for decades, served on the Board of Trustees and nearly every other committee. She was active in the Dunn Womans Club and was one of the organizers and served as the first president of Ideal Homemakers Club.

She may have been the oldest person still living at home, a feat made possible by her caregivers and her family, especially her niece Polly Clapp.

A celebration of life service will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Divine St. United Methodist Church by Rev. Beth Gaines. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.

She is survived by a son, Bill Pope and wife Rebecca of Statesville, a daughter, Rebekah  Kase and husband  Carlos, of Atlanta GA, eleven grandchildren; Sara P. Titchener, Claude Pope, Jr., Willie Pope, Ashley P. Allen, Emily Pope, Tilghman Pope, Wiley Pope, Carlos Kase, Jr., Nicolas Kase, Benjamin Kase, Cristina Cope, twenty six great grandchildren; Haywood Titchener, Margaret T. McDonald, Walt Titchener, Claude Pope, III, Thad Pope, Katie P. Guthrie, Alexander Pope, Parker Pope, Jackson Allen, Emmett Allen, Wesley Allen, Brittainy Pope, Tilghman Pope, Jr., Harris Pope, Mary Myers Pope, Harris Cope, Caroline Cope, Lucas Cope, Jackson Pope, Virginia Pope, Evelyn Rochelle Pope, Charlie Kase, Lionel Kase, Sebastian Kase, Charlotte Kase, and Alexander Kase, two great-great grandchildren; Olive and Eleanor Guthrie.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 12:45 to 1:50 p.m. at Divine St. United Methodist Church. The family asks instead of flowers that memorials be made to Divine St. United Methodist Church, 400 W. Divine St. Dunn, NC 28334.
