Obituary for Robert Warren Cannady

Robert Warren Cannady, retired principal and educator, passed away peacefully in his sleep on March 14th.  Born in Dunn, NC in 1925, he served in the army during WWII in the Pacific Campaign before pursuing a degree in Education from Atlantic Christian College in 1950.  He later earned Masters degrees from ECU and UNC-Chapel Hill in Advanced School Administration.  He taught at Westbrook School in Sampson County, Meadow High School in Johnston County, and Dunn High School before serving as Principal at Wayne Avenue School.  In 1966 he became the Principal at Erwin School where he retired in 1987.

Robert was a man of great spiritual conviction and faith. He provided leadership to his church as Chairman of Deacons and Sunday school teacher at both Erwin First Baptist Church and later at Dunn First Baptist Church.  Robert believed strongly in civic responsibility and was a member of the Dunn Post 59 American Legion, President of the Dunn Lions Club, Charter member and past president of the Erwin Rotary Club and member of the Erwin Chamber of Commerce.

A Celebration of life service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 20, at the First Baptist Church by Dr. Len Keever and Rev. Dick Graves. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.

Robert was married to the love of his life, Peggy Mason Cannady, for 52 years before she passed away in 2002.  He was a loving father to Kristi Cannady Ratte, and Tobie Cannady Haskins and her husband Butch Haskins.  Robert dearly loved and is survived by his current wife, Edna West Cannady.  He was so proud of his grandchildren Karlin and Joe Talerico, Jake and Ashton Haskins, Brianna Ratte, and Devin Ratte.  He has 3 great-grandchildren, Cole and Beau Talerico, and Everleigh Haskins.  He was pre-deceased by siblings Bert Cannady, Sam Cannady, Vira Todd, Edith Porter, Rachel Johnson, Doc Cannady, Mary Driver, and Howard Cannady.  He has one surviving sister, Myrt Smith in Texas.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, March 20, from 10 to 11 a.m. in the church parlor. The family asks instead of flowers that memorials be made to Transitions LifeCare 250 Hospice Circle, Raleigh, NC 27607 or to the First Baptist Church, 309 West Broad St. Dunn, NC 28334.
