Obituary for Mrs. Eunice Lee Ray Hockaday

Eunice Lee Ray Hockaday, 85, of Jonesboro Road, Dunn, died peacefully on Friday, September 8, after a long period of declining health.

Eunice was born near Bunnlevel on September 21, 1931 to the late Alex Ray and Hattie Bell Lucas Ray (who died shortly after Eunice and her twin sister were born). Eunice was raised in Erwin by her sister and brother-in-law, the late Berta and Joseph Delbert Beasley. She attended Erwin High School. She married Robert D. Hockaday of Dunn on July 1, 1950, and they were married for nearly 35 years prior to his unexpected death in May 1985.

Eunice loved life and appreciated her blessings. She enjoyed gardening, traveling, cooking, dancing, fishing and shopping, and until the end, she was a proud and devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved her many nieces and nephews dearly, and was a friend to all who knew her.

Over the years, Eunice worked with Wellons Candy Company, Erwin Mills, and Morganite. She was an active member of Grove Presbyterian Church.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 13, at 3:00 p.m. at Grove Presbyterian Church, 1358 Jonesboro Road, Dunn with Reverend Michael S. Weaver officiating. Burial will follow in Emma Johnson Cemetery near the church.

Eunice is survived by her sons, John Lee Hockaday, and his wife, Brenda, and Robbie Dean Hockaday, all of Dunn; her grandson, J. Travis Hockaday and his wife, Alyssa, of Raleigh; her granddaughters, Casey Hockaday Potts, and her husband, Reed, of Greenville, and Sarah Beth Hockaday Thorwart, and her husband, Daniel, of Missouri; her great-grandchildren, John Omwake Hockaday and Julia DeJean Hockaday of Raleigh, and Robin Elizabeth Potts of Greenville; one brother, Lovett Ray of Dunn; and her faithful companion, Thurman “Junie” Gaster, Jr. of Clinton.

In addition to her husband and parents, Eunice was preceded in death by her great-grandson, Henry Hinson Hockaday; parents-in-law, Mamie Turnage Hockaday and John D. Hockaday; sisters, Madie Hester, Berta Beasley, Naomi Thomas, and her twin, Betty McLamb; and brothers, Floyd Ray, Willie “Bill” Ray, James Alex Ray, Edgar Ray, and Daniel Ray.

The family will receive friends at Grove Presbyterian Church on Wednesday from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. prior to the funeral service, and at other times at the home of Brenda and Johnny Hockaday on Jonesboro Road, Dunn.

Flowers are welcome, and memorials may be made to Grove Presbyterian Church, 1358 Jonesboro Road, Dunn, N.C. 28334.

Services are entrusted to Skinner & Smith Funeral Home of Dunn.
