Obituary for Kathryn Butt Surles

Mrs. Kathryn Butt Surles died peacefully at her home October 11, 2019 after a short battle with pancreatic cancer.

Born in Mount Olive, NC on February 21, 1936 to the late Shelton (Doug) and Agnes Butt.  Reared after the age of three years old in Dunn, NC.  Kack was a devoted Christian, woman, wife, mother, sister, friend and confidant.    

Kack was baptized by Dr. George F. Cuthrell at Hood Memorial Christian Church in Dunn, NC at age nine.  She always had a special affection for her home church.    

Kack graduated Salutatorian from Dunn High School in 1954.  She went on to gradate Summa Cum Laude from Atlantic Christian College (now Barton College) in 1957.  She received the Hilley Cup for outstanding academic achievement.  Kack then went on to receive her Master’s Degree in Education / Mathematics from Duke University.     

Kack and husband (twice) Barney R. “Dick” Surles had three children and lived, worked and played in the Raleigh, NC area and vacationed many Summers at Ocean Isle Beach, NC with family and friends.      Kack enjoyed a distinguished thirty-year career as a biostatistician with the NC Division of Health Services. 

Governor James G. Martin conferred upon her The Order of the Long Leaf Pine for outstanding achievements in her field which included many articles in health-related journals.     A longtime member of Hillyer Memorial Christian Church in Raleigh, NC, she resumed active membership in March 2005 – and came to love Christ Jesus and His church all over again.    

Kathryn is survived by daughter, Kathryn Shelton Surles of USA, son, Barney Richard Surles, Jr. of Raleigh, NC, sister, Helen Butt Chilton of Atlanta, GA, sister, Alice Butt Odom, and brother-in-law, Larry Odom of Santee, SC.  She was loved by three nieces, a nephew, three grandchildren and three great grandchildren.    

Predeceased by father, Shelton (Doug) Nixon Butt of Dunn, NC, mother, Agnes Tart Butt Culbreth Averette of Dunn, NC, husband, Barney Richard Surles, Sr. of Raleigh, NC, daughter, Vara Elizabeth Surles of Raleigh, NC, and grandson, Cpl. Christopher Jenkins Dyer, USMC, of Cincinnati, OH.  

She was laid to rest at a graveside service attended by her family October 19, 2019 at Greenwood Cemetery in Dunn.
