Obituary for Joseph Odell Jackson

Joseph Odell (Pa Joe) Jackson, 83, of Dunn has been promoted to Glory! He died peacefully on Saturday, November 4, 2017 at the VA Hospital in Fayetteville, NC. He was born on June 14, 1934, in Harnett County, NC to the late Joseph (Joe) Turner and Luddie Amanda Bryant Jackson. He married Thelma Grace Ivey on January 16, 1955.

Mr. Jackson attended Dunn High School, was drafted into the US Army on May 18, 1956, before going on to serve in the Vietnam War. He held several positions while serving his country, as well as achieving top secret clearance and being responsible for classified materials. Mr. Jackson loved being a military man, being stationed at multiple bases, such as Ft. Gordon, Germany; White Plains, New Mexico Missile Range;and Kwajalein, Hawaii, among others. He received several awards, including The Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, and Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award and 6 Good Conduct Medals. He retired on June 30, 1976 with the rank of Master Sergeant. He then went on to work at Nello Teer and retired from that company in December 1998.               

Joseph was a member of Glad Tidings Church in Dunn since 1958, where he served as the church’s first Commander of Royal Rangers, sang in the sanctuary choir and served as an usher. He was a member of Palmyra Lodge # 147, 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason, Sudan Shrine Temple, Dunn Shrine Club, and a member of the DAV Chapter 74.               

He is preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Luddie, two sister Alice Jackson Cannady and Daisy Ruth Bayles, one brother Rueben C Jackson and one grandson Jon Christopher Phillips. 

Survivors include his bride of 62 years, Thelma; son, Ricky Turner Jackson, son, Edward (Kent) Jackson, wife Cindy; two grandchildren, Brandi Phillips Medlin, and Hillary Lynn Miller, husband Eddie; five great grandchildren, Samuel Waylon Medlin, Edward Wyatt Medlin, Aaron Denis Allen, Kaydence Leigh Miller and Clayton Royal Miller; and two sisters-in-law, Nancy Jackson and Lois Ivey. He will be missed by all who knew him.               

The family will receive friends on Monday from 6-8pm at Skinner & Smith Funeral Home. The funeral will be held at Glad Tidings Church on Tuesday at 11am with Reverend Tim Rice, Reverend Stephen King, and Reverend Belinda Cruse officiating. A graveside service will follow immediately after at Memorial Gardens with military honors.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Glad Tidings Church, Dunn, NC.
