Obituary for John M. Williams

John M. Williams, surrounded by his loving family, went to be with his Heavenly Father on Friday, February 22, 2019. John was born April 5, 1937 to Ethel Black Williams and John Raymond Williams.

John grew up in Harnett County on the family farm. He worked for the State of North Carolina with the Department of Corrections for 30 years until his retirement in 1998. John became a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Dunn where he has faithfully worshiped with his beloved Patsy and served as an Elder and as an usher and cook on a regular basis. In his earlier years, John’s passion was modified dirt track racing, which was later replaced with a love for the game of golf. John was often happiest when operating any form of equipment outdoors and farming. John loved his friends and could often be found cooking for them and enjoying fellowship with his dinner club.

As much as John was thrilled by his hobbies and outdoor interests there was nothing that brought more love and joy into his life than his family. John was exceptionally proud of “his boy,” his son, Dr. John Michael Williams. That pride and joy was only rivaled by John’s introduction to grandchildren. John could exhibit a tough exterior at times that fairly well crumbled with the birth of his first grandchild, Bailey Hayes Williams, followed by Daughtry Reid Williams. John was blessed with a loving wife, Patsy Williams, which allowed him to gain two more sons in John “Buddy” Smith and Michael “Chopper” Smith along with three more grandchildren, Maxwell, Jacob and Lucas Smith.  John would eagerly tell you about his grandchildren and failed to see any imperfections in them. He thoroughly enjoyed attending their sporting events and other activities and his desire to be around them was constant.

John was predeceased by his sisters, Catherine Williams Mangum, Beatrice Williams Roberts, Mary Frances Williams Reaves and Margaret Williams Burges and by brothers Earl Williams, Oscar Williams, Robert Williams and Hubert Williams.

John will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 24 years, Patsy Williams along with his son’s mother, Betty Williams, his son, Dr. John Michael Williams and wife, Heather Hayes Williams and their children Bailey and Daughtry Williams as well as John “Buddy” Smith, Michael “Chopper Smith” and wife Cori Smith and their sons Maxwell, Jacob and Lucas. John is also survived by siblings Eunice W. Smith of Princeton, Marie Taylor of Lillington, Junior Williams and Carolyn Williams of Bunnlevel.

A celebration of life service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Dunn at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 25th by Rev. Howard Dudley. The family will receive friends afterwards in the fellowship hall and at other times at the home of Michael and Heather Williams.

The family asks that instead of flowers memorials may be made to The Vision Project of First Presbyterian Church of Dunn at 901 N. Park Avenue, Dunn, NC 28334 or to the Dunn United Ministerial Association Food Pantry at 319 East Broad St., Dunn, North Carolina.
