Obituary for Helen Strickland Mangum

Mrs. Helen Hoover Strickland Mangum, 89, of Raleigh, passed away on May 31, 2018 at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh. She was born September 28, 1928 in the Plain View Community of Sampson County, North Carolina. Helen was the youngest of four children of Lewis Aubrey and Venie Godwin Strickland.  Helen is preceded in death by her parents, her beloved sister Fannie Strickland Bass and her two brothers, Lewis Harding and Alton Strickland.

She attended Plain View School where she enjoyed academics and playing basketball. Helen graduated high school in 1945 as Valedictorian of her class. She moved to Raleigh in 1955 to attend King’s Business College and was later hired by Newcomb & Company, a heating & air conditioning company. She loved her work and spent 45 years as the executive assistant to Charles A “Bo” Newcomb.

Though Helen lived in Raleigh, she always maintained membership at Lee’s Chapel Original Free Will Baptist Church, coming home each weekend to care for her mother, spend time with her sister and attend services. She lived the moral values obtained while growing up in the Plain View Community— the importance of God, commitment to church, respect for her fellowman, a strong work ethic, caring for others, and enduring family relationships.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, June 2, 2018 at Lee’s Chapel Original Free Will Baptist Church, 4948 Plain View Hwy with Dr. Brad Williamson and Dr. Ricky Warren officiating. A burial service will follow in Lee’s Chapel/Williford Cemetery.

Helen was a dedicated and devoted mother, sister, aunt, daughter and cousin. She leaves behind her son, Joe Victor “Joey” Mangum, Jr. and many nieces and nephews, all whom she dearly loved. Helen’s interests and passions included watching NC State basketball, Dancing with the Stars and NASCAR racing. She kept up with affairs at Lee’s Chapel Church and loved watching the weekly videos of the services.

The family will receive friends at 1 p.m., in the church sanctuary, prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, please send memorials to Lee’s Chapel Original Free Will Baptist Church, 4948 Plain View Hwy Dunn, NC 28334.
