Obituary for Hazel Core Godwin

Mrs. Hazel Core Godwin, 87, of Dunn died Friday morning at Senior Citizens Village. She was born in Sampson County on January 19, 1930 to the late George S. and Bettie R. Core. She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Godwin, a brother, Clayton Core, two sisters, Velma Godwin and Ruth Giugliano.

Hazel was a homemaker and a nurturing mother to her children and supported them in all of their school and sports activities. Later she lived in Fair Bluff from 1972 until 1983 where she was a member of Fair Bluff United Methodist Church and was a District Officer for the United Methodist Women. After moving back to Dunn in 1983 she worked in the circulation department for the Daily Record for 17 years.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher, a pastor’s aide and active in the Presbyterian Women. In addition to her civic and church activities she also enjoyed cooking for her family, spending time with her grandchildren and playing bridge.  

A funeral service will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church by Rev. Howard Dudley. The family will receive friends following the service in the church parlor. Burial will be private in the Godwin Family Cemetery.

She is survived by a son, Michael Godwin and wife Nancy of Greensboro, two daughters, Betty Byrd and husband Harry of Dunn, Susan Grissom and husband Mark of Newton Grove, six grandchildren, Matt Godwin and wife Marian, Michael Godwin, Jr. and wife Anna, Erin Young, Adam Byrd and wife Kata, Parker Grissom and Mark Grissom, Jr., eight great grandchildren, Jack, Holly and Martha Godwin, Anderson and Coble Adams, Isabel and Harvey Godwin and Julie Howard.The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff of Senior Citizens Village, Liberty Hospice and special caregiver, Yolanda Newkirk-Geddie.

Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 901 N. Park Ave. Dunn, NC 28334.
