Obituary for Brenda Hinson Hockaday

Brenda Lee Hinson Hockaday, 67, of Jonesboro Road, Dunn, died peacefully at home during the morning on Good Friday, March 30, 2018, after a long and well-fought battle with cancer.  She was surrounded by people she loved.

Brenda was born at Dunn Hospital on February 9, 1951.  She was the only child of the late Julia Etta Lee Hinson and Roland Leamon Hinson. 

She graduated from Dunn High School in 1969, and married John Lee Hockaday, her high school sweetheart,in February 1974.  Brenda worked with Erwin Mills in Accounts Payable for many years, and later with Betsy Johnson Regional Hospital in Fiscal Services.  She was a faithful member of Grove Presbyterian Church, where she served as a Ruling Elder and Deacon, and was active in the Women of the Church and the Sunday School.  She lived a life of devotion to her family, her friends, her church, and especially to her grandchildren, to whom she was “Nana.”  Her grace and faith were inspiring to many people. 

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 4 at 11:00 a.m. at Grove Presbyterian Church, 1358 Jonesboro Road, Dunn, with Reverend Michael S. Weaver and Reverend Earl M. Vaughan officiating. She will be laid to rest in the church cemetery. 

Brenda is survived by her husband of forty-four years, John Lee Hockaday;her son, J. Travis Hockaday, and his wife, Alyssa, of Raleigh; her daughter, Casey Elizabeth Hockaday Potts, and her husband, Reed, of Greenville; her grandchildren, John Omwake Hockaday and Julia DeJean Hockaday of Raleigh, and Robin Elizabeth Potts of Greenville; and a host of beloved cousins and aunts. In addition to her parents, Brenda was preceded in death by her grandson, Henry Hinson Hockaday; her grandparents, Lillie and James O. Lee, and Ettie and Osby Hinson; and her parents-in-law, Eunice and Robert D. Hockaday. 

The family will receive friends at Skinner & Smith Funeral Home on Tuesday, April 3, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., and at other times at the home on Jonesboro Road.   

Flowers are welcome, and memorials in Brenda’s memory may be made to Transitions LifeCare, 250 Hospice Circle, Raleigh, North Carolina 27607, or to Grove Presbyterian Church, Post Office Box 2319, Dunn, North Carolina 28335. 

Services are entrusted to Skinner & Smith Funeral Home of Dunn.
