Obituary for Bertie Celestial Lee Freeman

Bertie Celestial Lee Freeman was born on September 2, 1932 as the 4th child to Nola Johnson and Martin Luther Lee. Her siblings were Edwin Lee, Rachel Barefoot, Arah Lee, and Carolyn Tart. She has a son and daughter who love her very much and are dedicated to her loving memory. She loved her son-in-law, and daughter-in-law, and they also loved her. She has many cousins that she loved dearly. She has 8 nieces and nephews from her siblings and one niece and two nephew from her husband’s brother that loved her dearly. She was predeceased by her siblings for many years and was like a surrogate mother to ALL her nieces and nephews and their children as though they were her own.

She grew up right around the corner from Calvary Baptist Church and attended this church as a young girl. Calvary has always been special to Bertie. She was baptized here and was married in this church to Roland Erwin Freeman in May 1954.

She went to Meadow School and was Miss Meadow in 1950. In her senior year, she was quoted as saying “happiness is the beauty of beauty.” After high school, Bertie and several of her cousins including Jimmy, Granville, and Sallie, attended Kings Business College in Raleigh NC.

Roland Freeman was aboard the USS Rich, Destroyer Escort, when it hit mines during the invasion of Normandy. After four years in VA hospitals, that he went to Kings Business College and there he met Bertie Celestial Lee and they fell in love. Bertie helped heal all of his wounds both emotionally and physically.

They were married at Calvary Baptist Church on May 15, 1954. To know Bertie was to know how much she not only loved her immediate family but how much she loved and cared for all of her family and friends. To know Roland was to know how much he loved and cherished Bertie. They had a marriage that seemed to be like none other because of their mutual respect, trust and love. She always extended her love and concern for her family members. She never missed a birthday for her and Roland’s grand nieces and nephews. She took great delight and felt great love for them.

Bertie dedicated her adult life to her husband and children. She and Roland both volunteered at the local hospital for many years. She was a Sunday School teacher, Deacon, and Elder at her church, Northgate Presbyterian Church in Durham, NC. She and Roland traveled to their favorite places including Hawaii and Ireland. Two of their favorite places to visit were Blowing Rock, NC, and Charleston, SC. They attended the USS Rich Survivors Annual Conventions yearly throughout the country.

We are all so blessed that we had her in our lives. Her infectious smiles and love for her family and God are a gift we had for 86 years. Bertie’s family is rich in history. A quote taken from George P. Lee’s (her grandfather) obituary written by his sister, Azubah Lee, says “So don’t grieve; he is now resting after all his trials are over.” This is so appropriate for Bertie because we are celebrating her life.

A funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. on Monday at Calvary Baptist Church, in Dunn, NC. Lunch will be served at the Calvary Baptist Church at 12:00 p.m. followed by the visitation from 1 to 2 p.m. at Calvary. Burial will be in Lee-Johnson family Cemetery.
