Obituary for Barbara Scaggs Bynum

Barbara Ellen Scaggs Bynum joined the Church Triumphant on January 3, 2018, after a brief stay at Transitions LifeCare in Raleigh. She was preceded in death by her parents Raymond Scaggs and Margaret Young Scaggs of Columbia, SC; and her sister Katherine Bush and husband Keith of Lexington, SC.

Barbara attended Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC. She moved to Charlotte after graduation and marriage to Pete Bynum in 1960. They then moved to Raleigh, gave birth to two daughters, Laurie and Renee, before planting roots in Dunn, NC in 1970.

She became involved in her church, Divine Street United Methodist Church, when she joined the choir on her first visit. She has held every office in the church at least once or twice. She, along with her dear best “Bud” Joyce Draughon, have been delegates to the North Carolina Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church for many years. At Divine Street, she was extremely active in United Methodist Women, choir, Church Council, Fellowship and Care Committee, and had a huge love of working with the children during Vacation Bible School for 40 years.

Barbara also has been lively in numerous community activities. She held leadership positions with the Girl Scouts on the local level and Raleigh District. She started with the Dunn Jr. Women’s Club and chaired committees on the 1972-73 Red Stocking Revue. She then moved on to the Dunn Women’s Club where she held many offices at least once. Barbara has served as president of the Lucknow Garden Club, Tour and Arts Club, Betty Johnson Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, and United Methodist Women; and was state vice-president of the NC Federation of Women’s Clubs.  She volunteered with Meals on Wheels at its inception, at the hospital gift shop, and the DUMA Food Pantry. She was a board member of Pines of Carolina Girl Scout Council, member of the Dunn Area Drug Task Force, and member of the Cotton Festival Committee. Barbara chaired and served on many other committees and boards. She was the Women’s Club Woman of the Year and Dunn Area Chamber of Commerce Woman of the Year in 1984.

Barbara’s activities in her church and community are too numerous to include all, but her boundless energy and love of people were apparent to everyone who was blessed by her smile and sweet spirit. In the midst of all her busyness, Barbara still had time for her favorite activity of spoiling Pete.

Barbara is survived by her loving husband of 57 years Richard F. “Pete” Bynum of Dunn, daughters Laurie Bynum and Renee Ditcheos (Nick) of Raleigh, granddaughters Catherine and Elizabeth Ditcheos of Raleigh, sisters Joyce Scaggs and Penny Reynolds (Wayne) of Columbia, SC, nieces Dr. Kimberly Wilson and Kelly Watts, nephew Bryan Reynolds, and her precious cat Pansy.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 6, 2018, at Divine Street United Methodist Church, 400 W. Divine Street, Dunn, NC. Visitation with the family will be one hour before the service at 1:00 p.m. at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Divine Street United Methodist Church. Arrangements are by Skinner & Smith Funeral Home of Dunn.
