Obituary for Arvle E. Tart

Arvle E. Tart, 89, of Dunn died Wednesday morning, October 18, 2017 surrounded by family at his home. He was born in Johnston County on February 11, 1928, to the late John William and Ettie Barefoot Tart.  He was preceded in death by his loving wife of sixty-six years, Geneva Parker Tart as well as by brothers, Carlie B., William Eugene, Parlie D., Harvey, and Marvin Tart; and sisters VenieGeddie, Belle Jernigan, and Patsy Frost. 

He graduated from the Shuford Institute of Barbering in 1947 and barbered in Raleigh before coming to Dunn in 1954. He opened Tart’s Barber and Style Shop on E. Cumberland Street in Dunn, which he operated from 1955 until its closing in 1994.   
    
Mr. Tart was elected to the Dunn City Council in 1967 and was re-elected to serve for a total of 19 years.  During this time he also served on the Betsy Johnson Hospital Board and on the Regional M Council of Government. He was appointed as a Harnett County Magistrate in 1986, and served almost 15 years, retiring in December of 2000. He was a recipient of the ‘Order of the Long Leaf Pine’ Award, presented by Mayor Oscar Harris, on behalf of Governor James B.Hunt.      

He was a member of Holly Grove Advent Christian Church for more than 50 years serving as a deacon for 34 years as well as a Sunday school teacher. He transferred his membership to Gospel Tabernacle Church in 2003, where he was an active member until his death.

Survivors include sons Billy Tart and wife Becky of Dunn, Joey Tart and wife Melanie of Dunn; and daughters, Sandra Heath and husband Doug of Dunn and Sylvia Tart of Dunn; grandchildren, Brad Heath (Christie), Amy Heath, Katie Allen (Robbie), Susan Maurice (Thomas), Jennifer Tart, Sarah Roeser(Jake), Anna Tart, and Parker J. Tart; great-grand children Haley and Riley Heath, and Emily and Aubrey Allen; special friends Jeana and Sheridan Clermont; and sisters Estine Newton of Wilmington, Rachel Huff and Brenda Barbour, both of Corinth, Mississippi.

A funeral service will be held Monday at 11:00 am at Gospel Tabernacle Church, conducted by the Rev. Steve Lawson and Rev. Randy Hill. Burial will follow at Devotional Gardens. The family will receive friends Sunday from 5:00-7:00 pm at Gospel Tabernacle Church. Arrangements are being handled by Skinner and Smith Funeral Home of Dunn.
