John Hunter Tart of Philadelphia, PA died on March 11, 2012.
Hunter was born in Portsmouth, VA on November 15, 1973, the son of John P. and Susan H. Tart. He was the grandson of the late Edna Mae Tart, John Alvin and Miriam Tart, and Charles W. Hawks, and the nephew of the late Charles W. Hawks, Jr. and Edward B. Hawks.
Hunter grew up in Dunn, NC and graduated high school from the North Carolina School of Science and Math. He attended college at Wake Forest University, where he was Phi Beta Kappa and graduated summa cum laude with a B.S. in Mathematics. Following graduation, Hunter earned his M.S. in Mathematics from Stanford University. After working in the patent department for a technology start up company, he received a full scholarship to pursue a law degree at New York University Law School, where he earned his J.D. and served as an Executive Editor of the New York University Law Review. After law school, Hunter served a one year clerkship with John G. Koeltl of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, followed by a three year clerkship with Pauline Newman of the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington, D.C. In August 2011, Hunter joined the faculty at the Earle Mack School of Law at Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA, where he taught International Intellectual Property Law, Trademarks & Unfair Competition and Patents. Hunter enjoyed the challenge of teaching students and thrived in the academic environment. Hunter had a love of the outdoors and hiking, which he acquired at an early age through his involvement in the Boy Scouts. He was an intrepid traveler, a witty comic at times, but above all, he was a loyal friend and a beloved son and brother.
In addition to his parents, Hunter is survived by his sister, Charlotte L. Tart of Raleigh, NC and his maternal grandmother Charlotte C. Hawks of Portsmouth, VA. He is also survived by his uncle Dr. James A. Tart and wife Mary, his uncle James C. Hawks and wife Claudia, his aunt Patricia B. Beam and husband Richard, and first cousins David Tart and wife Mindy, Jenny Tart, Carney Hawks and wife Melissa, Ned Hawks and wife Jocelyn, Lindsay Hawks, Jeff Hawks, Jason Hawks and wife Dawn, Justin Hawks, Ricky Beam and wife Terry, Nancy Beam, and Scott Beam and wife Amy.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, March 20, from 1 to 2 p.m. at Skinner & Smith Funeral Home, 905 Erwin Road, Dunn, NC 28334. The memorial service will start at 2:00 p.m., followed by burial in Greenwood Cemetery in Dunn, NC. More information can be found online at skinnerandsmith.com.
